INTACH UK Trust, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, UK, exists to foster closer ties in the field of art and cultural heritage between the UK and India. INTACH UK Trust is a registered UK Charity and is based in London.

INTACH UK Trust awards discretionary scholarships to UK citizens to allow them to undertake educational study visits to India in the field of art and cultural heritage. These visits allow UK citizens to undertake research and gain professional experience through projects or work placements. Most recipients of scholarships are young professionals in the early stages of their careers, or students.

INTACH UK Trust cooperates with other Trusts and Foundations and sometimes makes joint awards. It also supports conservation work and conservation training in India, working with organisations active in India in the conservation field.

Formation of the INTACH UK Trust

The INTACH UK Trust was set up with funds bequeathed by Charles Wallace, a British businessman in India, who died in 1916. He held the view that that 'all possessions great and small being acquired from or through the people, as mine were, should return to the people'.

His estate was shared under the terms of his will, between the British Treasury and the Treasury of British India. After 1971 the portion given to the Treasury of British India was divided between the Governments of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Burma.

In 1987 the Indian and British Prime Ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding, under which the Indian Government agreed to use its share of the benefaction to establish INTACH UK, while the British Government agreed to use its funds to further educational visits to the UK for people from India, through setting up the Charles Wallace Trust as a 'sister' trust to INTACH UK Trust.

INTACH

INTACH, the Indian National Trust for Cultural Heritage, was founded in 1984 and is based in New Delhi. It is a non-governmental membership organisation whose remit is the conservation of the natural and man-made environment in India.

INTACH has close informal links with INTACH UK Trust and has benefited from conservation grants for its work from INTACH UK Trust.
