The Mining History Centre is running an international conference "Des Machines et des Hommes" on the emergence and implementation of technical innovations in coal mines.  A wide range of speakers from France, China, Poland, India, UK, Australia and Belgium will look at the impact on mining of hydropower, new machinery and methods, industrial injury and professional training, and how mining has been reflected in literature and photography.  The conference takes place on 19 and 20 November 2012 at the Mining History Centre in Lewarde, near Douai in northern France.  There are good train links from Lille and Paris, and there will be a shuttle bus from Douai to the centre.  For more details and a booking form contact vdebrabant@chm-lewarde.com   Registration fee for 2 days is 100 euros, reduction for students.
