We’re pleased to announce that Prof. Kevin MacDonald, Professor of African Archaeology at University College London (UCL) will deliver this year’s ICOMOS-UK Christmas lecture. The theme of the lecture is ‘Timbuktu under Threat’ and Prof. MacDonald will explore the background behind the recent headlines on the tragic, systematic destruction of Malian heritage sites by rebel groups in Timbuktu and elsewhere. Timbuktu’s long history played a significant role in the trans-Saharan gold trade, saw the city as a remarkable centre for learning and as home to thousands of manuscripts dating from 13th – 20th century.

This rich cultural heritage is now under threat. Find out more by joining us on Thursday 13th December for our annual Christmas lecture.

As usual, we’ll be sharing festive drinks and mince pies after the lecture and we hope that you’ll be able to join us.
